Augmented reality has a wide range of applications in several industries and thanks to the rise of consumer smart devices and overall computing technology developments it now has lots of potential in the mainstream consumer space as well. The two areas where we have seen a lot of commercial development in augmented reality are education and gaming.

Augmented reality games consist of a portable device, augmented reality card (AR card), software, compass and GPRS. The device is pointed at the AR card which then triggers the appearance of a series of images or a game. One example of this is the Nintendo 3DS system which includes a games card that enables you to see computer generated images via your DS. The basic theme to this and many other augmented reality games is that of a special AR games card which you point your phone or games console at. The device will contain an image recognition system which also recognises QR codes and a means of displaying these images and/or data. It combines real and virtual images together via the video stream function located within the phone or console.
This process takes place in real time which is why you are able to see these 3D images as you point the phone/console at the augmented reality (AR) games card. The first seriously popular AR game on mobile were Ingress and Pokemon Go. Before that it was mostly proof of concept games and stuff like that. It hasn’t changed much. Most augmented reality games are still proof of concept and time killer style games.
Ingress was one of the first really good AR games on Android. It was developed by Niantic. It had a huge buzz when it first came out. The way it works is that you go out into the real world.
The game shows you where some portals are. You hack the portals for your team and then build them up so that the other team can’t. You’ll have two teams to pick from and that’s where the challenge comes from.
It’s entertaining and it’ll get you off the couch. It’s a good alternative for those who like the idea of Pokemon Go, but don’t like Pokemon.

Pokemon Go is the biggest mobile game ever. It also turns out to be one of the largest AR games ever. Like Ingress, the basic premise has you going out into the real world. You’ll capture Pokemon, hit up Pokestops, and battle Gyms. The game is still very much in development. That means its features are evolving. It had a ton of hype when it first came out. The hype has died down, but the game is still fairly popular among players. It’s a good experience and it’ll get you off the couch.
Augmented reality will develop in line with mobile technologies, for example, more augmented reality apps which provide additional information that enhances what is already there. AR innovations offer the scope of a wide market. AR trends help various industries, including commercial, marketing, education and training, and travel and tourism. AR will be beneficial to managers in varying ways. They can track their work and work associated progress in real-time. Moreover, AR takes marketers to a whole new level, where they can attract more customers and create a buzz, which enables them to provide their customers something that their competitors cannot. This technology has its limitations which are likely to be overcome at some point in the future. But, nevertheless, it is important to be aware of them. These include limitations regarding GPRS, information overload and privacy. With privacy there is a danger of someone having access to sensitive or private information about another person and without their consent.
